Chris Carnel Gallery - 10/5/07

Gallery Art Work

Hey whats up, I’m Tre` Dauenhauer and I’m evo’s staff photographer. This last Friday night we had the privilege of Chris Carnel coming to our gallery show for Fremont’s “First Friday Art Walk.” If you don’t recognize his name, you might have seen his work all over snowboarding magazines for the past 20 years.

This would look great above the mantle

It was great to hang out with Chris and listen to some of the stories behind the photographs that I grew up seeing in all the mags (was the Heckler Co-Founder and Special Projects Photographer). There was this one shot of Tony Alva that I remember back when I started skating. Absolutely great timing as Chris capture him doing a big frontside grind in an empty pool with a plane passing perfectly over head. People passed through the gallery and you could over hear all the talk about the old school gear that people used to rock back in the day.

Sleepy time for the little guy
The Artist Chris Carnel

There were a few people that circled around to hear about a story behind one of the classic shots of snowboarding in a custom made trench coat. Chris explains that the jacket was so warm that you had to ride with it open to keep from over heating, but was warm enough at night to zip it up all the way and sleep in the backseat of your car to catch first chair the next day. There was a bit of excitement when this little guy challenged and bet everyone at Rock ‘Um Sock ‘Um Robots. He tried to challenge me but I just couldn’t put my camera down…and I didn’t want to lose to him my home turf.

ROCK 'UM SOCK 'UM
I challenge you!

If you didn’t make it down, please come by the gallery to check out Chris’s work, you’ll be surprised at how much you might recognize!

No rest for the wicked...or evo for that matter!

This past weekend was, to say the least, busy!

FRIDAY - "LA LA LAND" & "IN SHORT"
Friday night was the premier for not only Blank Paper Studios' "In Short" but a double whammy also featuring Runway Films' "La La Land." Bonfire brought down the man, the legend David Benedek, Leanne "Party P" Pelosi and a good chunk of the roster from the films.

As a premptive strike to what could've been a gnarly start to the coming morning there was some gourmet food on hand for party goers. Seattle's acclaimed Ohana catered the affair with sushi and a banquet table of delectables ta boot! If you're familiar with David Benedek's work, lets just say this is nothing shy of the genius we've seen in Robot Food films of the past!

As for Pelosi's "La la land", this ain't just a chick flick. Super styly, great soundtrack and killer cast. Following the shows, the party ended up in the streets and made its way towards Seattle hotspot the Triangle for the post party and healthy antics. Neil, where were you?? Check out the photogallery from Friday HERE!

SATURDAY - "SEVEN SUNNY DAYS"
As a follow up to a fairly chill Friday and good warmup to the weekend, Matchstick Productions roared into town for the Seattle Premier of "Seven Sunny Days." I'm hoping you were at our side down at Fremont Studios for the show, but for those of you who missed out, lets just say, you missed out! Eric Hjorleifson, Mark Amba, Sammy Carlson, James Heim, Rory Bushfield, Mike Douglas present and accounted for. Following a highly anticipated premiere,we delivered a highly anticipated followup to last year's MSP Afterparty. The crowd waisted no time in getting down the street to evo, and PBR tall boys were abundant ready to refresh. In an effort to keep this short, let's just get this out there real quick like; stoked movie-goers, VIP's, incredible giveaways from Salomon and Steven's Pass, a DJ, old school, new school, break beats, bboys, bgirls, friends, family, and nothing less than good times!

I've been hearing rumors of snow hitting the ground all over the place, here are some recent shots from Whistler Blackcomb!

"Total snowfall in the alpine so far is about 50+ cm. Official snow measurements begin November 1!!!

Let the countdown to opening day begin"

Friends of evo PLACE at Red Bull's Soap Box race!!

-As told by Erin Phillips of SuperBig Creative

"Being the first girl after two boys in the family, I said that a lot.

I don't get to be in the limelight much so I am taking full advantage.

My team had no idea that the Red Bull Soap Box race was going to be such a big deal but evidently, 20,000 people showed up to watch Saturday's event...

Having begun the project one week ago, we had no, and I mean no expectations - you can imagine how excited we (Kevin Walsh, Scott Fuller, Joe Cooper and Matt Adams - employees of Superbig and Red Soul) were when we won!!!

We were given a choice between going to a Nascar race and cold hard cash - and, even though the idea of watching cars drive in circles for hours is enticing, we went for the sweet, sweet mula.

Check out the link above or below for the video of our skit and race.

"In front of thousands of spectators and racing fans, a handful of teams from across the country made it into Red Bull Soapbox Race history.?
Red Bull Soapbox Race challenges 36 teams of amateurs to engineers to craft outrageous human-powered carts to race against the clock in a downhill sprint to the finish line. On September 29th, racing dreams become reality on Seattle?s Fremont Avenue with a half-mile course that?tested not just speed but steering ability.?

Despite having teams from all over the country competing, it was four teams from Washington that took home the awards. Seattle's own A-Team took first place in the event, followed by Seattle-based Nickerson Rainier Racer in 2nd place and Sammamish, Washington's Rollin' Troll of Freemont in 3rd place. The People's Choice award, which is awarded to the team with the most text votes from the fans, went to Seattle's Rollaroid 600.?"
